Why is the Sky Blue
TLDR
The Sun produces a light that appears white but actually has all the colors of the rainbow. Light has different waveforms, some colors have long slow waves like the color red. Blue however has lots of waves that are choppy. So, the light gets scattered by molecules and is blue the more prevalent color when getting scattered through earth’s atmosphere.
Ok so let's start off with a series of my favorite questions… why? Why does light look white to our eyes (don’t stare at the sun please) but actually contains all the colors in a rainbow? Well unlike mixing paint when you mix all the colors of light you get white, which rhymes so that makes remembering that easy!
Next why. Why do we see the wavelengths that have short choppy waves and not the long lazy waves? The best way I can think of explaining why is like this. Our eyes detect motion. So are you more likely to see a cat creeping through the woods all stealth like or a dog with floppy ears romping about. Not sure about you but my eyes would see the dog way before the cat. So in this analogy the dog is blue light and the cat is the other more long and lazy color wavelengths. Making the blue light the color we see and hence making the sky blue!
